DUCs -- August, 2021 Data

Provided by a reader; sent to me on September 22, 2021.

The reader sent me data for all major plays in the US. Here is the Bakken data.

A lot of hand-wringing over DUCs.

  • December, 2013: 570 DUCs in the Bakken.
  • Fast forward to August, 2021: 563 DUCs in the Bakken.

Production maintained:

  • despite only 39 wells drilled in August, 2021
  • despite only 66 wells completed in August, 2021

Ten days to drill a well:

  • how many rigs needed to drill 40 wells in one month?
  • one rig could drill three wells in one month
  • 40 / 3 = 13 rigs
  • there are about 26 active rigs in North Dakota
  • so, with 26 active rigs and 40 wells drilled = 1.5 wells / rig / month = about 15 days per well which is more realistic
